Rating: Reviewed by: BRW BLOCKED, 29 May 2024The life fantastic“Fantastic Four – Life Story” collects the six-issue mini-series of that name.The ‘life story’ concept is a ‘What If?’ variant in which we see the characters involved – there was a Spider-Man volume some time back – living their lives in the/a real-time world, beginning here in 1963 with President Kennedy calling in Reed Richards to get an American space programme up and running to counter the Russian successes, and ending in ‘modern times’ with the surviving characters aged accordingly.Some of the comic-book adventures get recapitulated here, where they contribute to the storyline, though this is an Earth-based series, with no adventuring in space or parallel worlds, but this is more about the characters themselves and not about superheroing, though Victor von Doom, the Silver Surfer and Galactus all have their parts to play in the drama.This really is about the life story of the characters and not a series of superhero adventures, and the plot/story is arranged as such.This was an entertaining ‘what if? Story, well-written and excellently illustrated, but it wasn’t really OUR Fantastic Four. Be warned.
