St Albans and Western Hertfordshire in the British Civil Wars 1642-51

Books
The civil Wars fought between 1642 and 1651 were about conflicting ideologies on many levels - religious as well as political. Most of the population in St Albans and the surrounding area supported Parliament. Their burden was greater here than elsewhere. St Albans was pivotal to defending London and was fortified. It was the Parliamentarian army headquarters for a substantial period. Cromwell, Fairfax and other generals knew it well. Armies rendezvoused, were quartered and marched through the area to fight the royalists. This the first study of a Parliamentary town, other than London, which did not experience a siege.
