Books
Eighty years after its end, the authors have created a portrait of life in Chorleywood during the Second World War, and of the 37 men from the village who died in the service of their country. Informed by newly available archive materials, contemporary press reports, personal testimonies, and other sources, this book reveals the war's immediate and lasting impact on a growing community - from declaration on 3rd September 1939, through to eventual peace and the start of a slow recovery, six long years later. The book charts the preparations for war, the arrival of hundreds of evacuees, the troops and prisoners of war based at Chorleywood House, the mobilisation of the Home Guard, and the work of land girls, firemen, ARP wardens and other volunteers. Less than 25 miles from London, but not on the front line of action, the war touched every corner of life in this Hertfordshire village, as it did in communities across the country.
