In 1922, as a 15-year-old schoolboy, Auden decided to become a poet. In 1928, just down from Oxford, he produced his first book, "Poems", printed by his friend Stephen Spender. During his years of apprenticeship Auden wrote over 200 poems, and all which survive are included in this book.
