Books
The churchwardens' accounts in this volume relate to the parish of Berkhamsted St Peter, in western Hertfordshire, for the period 1584-1660. They have been extracted from a much larger account book, now held in the British Library, which continues until 1748. The early years are very fragmentary, but from 1589 through to the 1630s there are detailed accounts for most years. They record income from parish properties and payments for burials, and expenditure on church administration including building works, particularly on the church roof, and the refashioning of the bells. Payments for work such as the improvement of the pulpit indicate the parish adapting to the changing requirements of worship after the Reformation.
