The Gade Valley, the Paper Valley, became a crucible for change. When the Gade Valley became a building block of the Industrial Revolution, a new era was created for paper production and printing. In the five centuries after John Tate established England's first paper mill at Hertford the demand for paper grew continuously as the essential material for books, letters, newspapers, magazines, record keeping, packaging and much more. Growth surged at the beginning of the 19th century when paper production became mechanised. The world's first paper making machines first saw the light of day in the village of Apsley which sits on Hertfordshire's River Gade. Frogmore Mill and Apsley Mill were just the beginning, subsequent additions made the Gade Valley a world leader in paper production. This publication aims to correctly place Apsley and the Gade world history. In the process it is hoped to provide added sense of place for all who live, work and visit the Gade Valley.
