Department of Trade and Industry : renewable energy
2005
Books
The Government has set a target of securing 10 per cent of Britain's electricity supply from renewable sources by 2010, and aims to double this level by 2020. The use of renewable energy on this scale would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by between 20-27 million tonnes, and this increased diversity of supply would also strengthen the UK's energy security outlook. However, at present, most renewable energies are not commercially viable. The Department for Trade and Industry has established a variety of mechanisms to help secure their development and use, such as the Renewables Obligation which requires all electricity suppliers to source an increased proportion of their total annual sales from renewable sources. Total public support for renewable technologies is expected to average [pound]700 million per annum between 2003-06, rising to [pound]1 billion by 2010. This report examines the progress made by the DTI against its targets thus far, identifies the key factors likely to determine the future growth of renewable energy; and considers the cost to the consumer and taxpayer of supporting renewable energy.
