Ernest William Smith, Sergeant, Royal Field Artillery, was said to have come from Croydon, married in Tiverton, Devon, and was gassed during the Great War. That was all that was knew of him, Just that - no dates, no service number. Nothing more. Yet the authors of this book, his grandson and great-granddaughter, managed to find out who he was and traced his family back through the county, back through the centuries to 1497. This is the story of that search.
